Cultural Information

1535 AD: The earliest Mescalero Apache Indians were known to be Inhabitants of Southeastern Colorado.
1540 to 1727: was a period of Spanish exploration, occupation, and influence in the area. 1700 is the earliest record of Ute Indians in Southeastern Colorado. They came from west of the Rockies.
1707: is about the time the Comanches Natives followed their Ute allies into Southeastern Colorado, coming also from west of the Rockies.
In 1727: control of the southern plains passed from the Jicarilla- Apaches to the Comanches and their Ute allies. The Comanches drove the Utes back into the mountains.
By 1755, the Comanche and were now the "Masters of the Southern Plains" until the white man's arrival around 1805. Very few whites dared enter the area during the period 1755 to 1805.
