San Carlos Apache Reservation was quite large and included part of what is now the Fort Apache Reservation. However, between 1873 and 1902, Executive Orders returned much of this land to the public domain. By 1903, the Reservation was about 1/3 its original size. Today membership numbers more than 10,000, and the Reservation contains 1,826,541 acres. It lies in Gila and Graham Counties.
